February 2011 Guild Meeting

Our annual “Tie-In for Northeast Kids” was an ‘overflowing’ success. Over 30 quilt tops and backings were paired with battings graciously donated by the Gloversville Sewing Center.  Guild members had the opportunity to visit with other members over a good old-fashioned quilt tying.  The tied quilts were taken home by volunteers who will finish the quilts by attaching the binding and bring them back to a future guild meeting where they will be collected and turned over to Northeast Parent & Child and given to a child in need. As for it being an ‘overflowing’ success, since we had so many quilt tops, there were several pairings left over and it was decided to hold a second tie-in at the March meeting.

The evening also included a short business meeting and members’ show & tell.  Q.U.I.L.T.S. extends a special Thank You! to Gloversville Sewing Center for their generous donation of batting.

January 2011 Guild Meeting

Karen Brackett from Skidmore College and Patti Estabrook from Patti’s Quilting & Fabrics in Glens Falls gave a wonderful presentation of their Education Study Program in South Africa.  This program is designed to expose Skidmore College students to the history, culture, geography and education system of South Africa.  While this program has been in operation for several years, around 2008 they began a collaboration with Patti’s Quilting Shop to create quilts for South African children and also to teach them basic sewing and quilting skills.  Included in the presentation were the story quilts created by Skidmore students.  More information on this program can be found at Patti’s Quilting & Fabrics or at Skidmore in Africa.

December 2010 Guild Meeting

The December guild meeting always brings holiday cheer. At this year’s meeting, Quilters United In Learning Together, Schenectady (Q.U.I.L.T.S.) members were treated to a presentation by Bob Silverman & Jim Helms from The Joyful Quilter. Bob and Jim gave an update of the new shop, which will open in January 2011, along with an overview of upcoming class offerings – including samples!

Thanks to the generosity of our members, tables were piled high with gloves & mittens for the children at Northeast Parent & Child, gloves and socks for the men at the City Mission and personal care items for the women at the Family Life Center. The meeting also included the always impressive show & tell of member’s works and the sharing of holiday cookies, cakes, candies and cheer.

Nov 2010 Guild Meeting – Annual Sew-In for Northeast Kids

The 2010 Q.U.I.L.T.S. Sew-In for Northeast Kids was held at The Underground at Proctors.   The sew-in began at 4:30, giving members more time to work together sewing, pressing and cutting pre-cut kits for quilt tops which will be tied during the February 2011 tie-in and donatated to Northeast Parent & Child.   The Guild treated members to salad and pizza from Home Style Caterers, Union Street, Schenectady, NY.   Members were also treated to homemade cookies made by Peg Palange as a thank you for all their contributions and help to the Autumn Inspirations 2010 Show Boutique.  A short business meeting was held, followed by the usual dazzling display of members’ show & tell.
