February 2016 Guild Meeting – Annual Tie-In for Kids

The February Guild Meeting was our annual Tie-In for Northern Rivers Kids. The Tie-In began at 4:00 so we could get an early start on tying quilts. Those members who were able to come early enjoyed salad and pizza. After a short business meeting, the tying continued throughout the evening. There was no show & tell at this meeting.

A special thank you goes out to Gloversville Sewing Center, who graciously donates the battings for these quilts each year.

January 2016 Guild Meeting

Sue Pettengill, owner of The Joyful Quilter, gave a very inspiring lecture on Slow Stitching. Everyone has their own personal story as to why they quilt. The bottom line is: Quilting has the power to heal us – quilting together makes us stronger, helps us through grief & illness, brings us joy, connects us, gives us hope & courage, makes us better problem solvers, makes us better people (generous), and inspires us to be more creative with everything in our lives.

The Slow Stitching movement, launched by Mark Lipinski, is a cure for today’s need for speed & greed. It is defined as “Approaching your craft being fully present & deliberately intentional in order to be in a relationship with your creative self.” Sue ended her presentation by challenging us to work on our craft by spending 20 minutes a day being totally mindful at every step of the process.

December 2015 Guild Meeting

The December guild meeting was our annual Holiday Celebration, with members bringing in their favorite ‘sweet and savory’ treats to share. In addition to making comfort quilts for donation to Northern Rivers Family Services and the VA Hospital throughout the year, members brought in special donations of hats and gloves for the children at Northern Rivers and personal care items for the women at the Schenectady City Mission.

November 2015 Guild Meeting

Internationally-known quilt teacher, artist and author, Joen Wolfrom gave an interesting, informative presentation on Color Play. Joen also conducted a 2-day workshop on color theory.

We are sure she was impressed by our own guild members’ use of color during the always impressive show & tell.
